Stars on the Square

April 22, 2017 @ 12:00 am - 3:00 am

The popular Stars on the Square event returns to Burnsville Town Square, Friday, April 21. The Blue Ridge Astronomy Group (BRAG) hosts the event. Group members will set up telescopes of all sizes to look at Jupiter and its moons, galaxies, star clusters and other night-sky wonders. The town diverts traffic and turns off the lights on Town Square for better viewing conditions. Earlier in the afternoon BRAG members will create a sidewalk solar system. Starting at the monument in the center of Town Square, they will draw the sun with sidewalk chalk. Then they will move down Main Street spacing out elements of the solar system on a scale of 10 feet per 1 astronomical unit. The demonstration will cover three blocks. This particular Stars on the Square event is part of the NC Science Festival’s Statewide Star Party, which involves public sky-watching sessions at 49 sites across the state.
