Christmas Bird Count

December 28, 2019

The sixth-annual Audubon Christmas Bird County organized for Yancey County by High Peaks Birders takes place on Saturday, December 28. What is a Christmas Bird Count? It’s an opportunity to join in the largest citizen science census, now in its 120th year. The data collected by volunteer CBC participants over the past century have become one of only two large pools of information informing ornithologists and conservation biologists how the birds of the Americas are faring over time. If you would like to volunteer and claim your area, contact Russ at rmoates54@gmail.com for information.

What do you need to participate?  Binoculars (if you have them), weather-appropriate clothing, and water and snacks depending on your needs. The CBC is an all-day event; however, if you can only participate for part of the day, you are still welcome to join. All skill levels and ages are welcome. The leader of each field survey team will be an experienced bird watcher; if you’re new, it’s a fun opportunity to improve your skills.  If you’re handy with a camera, you may like to bring it as well. (In case of bad weather, alternate day is January 4.)
