Woolly Worm Festival @ Historic Banner Elk School
Oct 21 @ 9:00 am – Oct 22 @ 4:00 pm
Woolly Worm Festival @ Historic Banner Elk School | Banner Elk | North Carolina | United States

Since 1978, this quirky, world-famous festival has been used to predict the upcoming winter weather for the North Carolina High Country.

According to legend, the 13 bands on the woolly worm (woolly bear caterpillar) represent the 13 weeks of winter. Brown bands indicate a mild week, black bands indicate a cold, snowy week. Since every woolly worm has different colors, the Woolly Worm festival holds races to determine which worm is used to make the forecast. The owner of the winning worm receives $1,000!

Festival also includes about 175 craft vendors, food, live entertainment and rides. This two-day family event annually draws more than 20,000 attendees.

Trick or Trail 5-Mile & 1-Mile Spooky Sprint @ Dupont State Forest
Oct 21 @ 6:30 pm
Trick or Trail 5-Mile & 1-Mile Spooky Sprint @ Dupont State Forest | Hendersonville | North Carolina | United States

The only race of its kind in the region, participants will strap on headlamps and light up the night as they duke it out in the dusk. The twists and turns of DuPont’s famous trail system will dare them to push forward, not knowing what bogies and specters might lurk around each corner! The One Mile Spooky Sprint will be Halloween themed, and a great chance for kids and kids-at-heart to break in their costumes a day early, without stressing about time limits, as this event is untimed!
