100 miles … can you do it? Many North Carolina Park visitors are trying to do just that, hike 100 miles in 2017. Meet Ranger Kevin Bischof as he leads a hike in early Winter to discover the what winter residents are in the park. The 2-1/4-mile, moderate hike will trek around the Fox Den Loop trail. Meet at 11 a.m. in the Catawba River Area of the park near the picnic shelter.
In the Asheville Marathon, held on the grounds of The Biltmore Estate, runners will explore 26.2 and 13.1 miles through America’s largest backyard. The Asheville Marathoners will wind through hardwood forests, meadows, gardens, and extraordinary views of the estate. Along the way, runners will pass landmarks including Biltmore House and gardens, America’s largest and most esteemed private residence.
2 day event! Overnight relay runners love the Smoky Mountain relay, which was patterned after the famous Hood to Coast relay (12-person, 2-van team) in the Pacific Northwest. As a team member, you will be one of the first to experience the 212 miles of trails, forest service, and rural county roads that traverse this beautiful area. The overnight relay run starts at Pink Beds Park in Brevard, NC and ends at the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City, NC. The Smoky Mountain Relay course takes runners through some of the most beautiful, pristine, and challenging terrain in the Southeast. Along the route runners will see the magnificent granite dome of Looking Glass and spectacular views from the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Mountain to Sea trail.
The Lung Buster Time Trial Series is a seven-part competitive time trial racing series of cycling events in Western North Carolina held with the intent of providing all participants a professional racer experience, no matter how fast you are. All levels and abilities of cyclists are invited to participate! The 2017 series includes four flat & fast out-and-back courses, two are 20k or 40k routes along Riverside Drive between Marshall and Asheville and two are 20k courses on Etowah River Road. **New to 2017 is the addition of Team Time Trials for the flat routes. Teams can consist of 2-4 participants. You may participate in individual and Team TT in the same day.

Come out and celebrate Mother’s Day weekend by also Support Safe Motherhood with a 10K run beginning at Carrier Park and continuing along the French Broad River. Proceeds benefit Mama Maisha, an Asheville-based non-profit making motherhood safer in Tanzania. Pregnancy complication-related deaths are rare in developed countries, but in Tanzania, one mother dies every single hour.
North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS) is hosting a half century bike ride in honor of Collier Lilly. The ride offers a beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain route, the 50-mile half century with 3,600 feet of climbing, that will start and end at Carrier Park in Asheville. In keeping with Outward Bound’s bedrock principles of “challenge and discovery,” the Collier Lilly Ride for NCOBS will take riders over challenging mountain passes and allow them to discover scenic roads for the first time. This exciting event is being held on Memorial Day Weekend and in conjunction with the ever-popular Mountain Sports Festival.
The 14th annual WNC Flyer (formerly called Fletcher Flyer) will be held in the “Cycling Capital of the South”, Brevard, NC. The start/finish will be at Oskar Blues Brewery in Brevard, NC. What better way to spend the day than with a Bike Ride, Bluegrass, BBQ and a complimentary first Brew!
Riders will have their choice of a full century, metric century, half century, and half metric rides which wind through the valleys south of Asheville, NC. Although it is the least hilly ride in Western North Carolina, it has plenty of rolling hills to keep all riders interested. There is beautiful mountain scenery without the long mountain climbs. The Flyer is a ride for everyone from first-time riders to experience riders.
The 5th annual Hunter Subaru LPC Throwback Triathlon is the perfect event in which to challenge one’s self, regardless of competition experience or athletic prowess. It features a 200-yard outdoor pool swim, a 17.5 mile bike on quiet country roads, and a rolling 5k run with an on-track finale in which to summon your mighty kick to the tape! The Kid’s Splash N’ Dash, which begins at 10:30, means even budding athletes can participate in the throwback thrills without adults towering overhead!
