North Carolina author Thomas Wolfe's childhood home is now the Thomas Wolfe Memorial. The 29-room boarding house, run by Wolfe's mother Julia, is one of American literature's most famous landmarks. Wolfe immortalized the "Old Kentucky Home" as the setting of his epic autobiographical novel, "Look Homeward, Angel".

The founding of Valdese in Burke County by the Waldensians won statewide recognition in the spring of 1893. Etched in history as the oldest Evangelical church in the world, the Waldensians predate the Reformation by hundreds of years. Come to Valdese and hear their story of faith and determination. Visit the Trail of Faith and experience life as they lived it and continue your day at the Waldensian Museum viewing the items they used in their crafts of bread baking and winemaking. Be sure to stop by the Waldensian Winery and sample their nine different wines and listen to the local people share their stories of the Waldensians. Group tours can be booked through the Valdese Tourism Office.

The Western North Carolina Nature Center

The WNC Nature Center is 40 acres of animals in their native Southern Appalachian Mountain habitats. It provides an opportunity to learn, to touch, and to know our rich natural heritage through educational and interactive exhibits. The Center has received such honors as "Best Place To Take The Kids In WNC" in an Asheville Citizen-Times readers poll and has served 26,000 students and teachers in their science curriculum.
